The right Florida real estate renewal course depends on your license type and renewal stage. Post-license education applies to the first renewal after initial licensure in that license category. Regular continuing education generally applies to later renewals. Buying the shortest course without checking your record can leave the actual requirement unfinished.
Match the course to your renewal
For licensees subject to the standard education requirements: sales associates complete 45 hours of post-license education before their first renewal; brokers and broker associates complete 60 hours before their first broker renewal. Later renewals generally require 14 hours of CE: 3 hours of Core Law, 3 hours of Ethics and Business Practices, and 8 hours of specialty education.
A broker upgrade creates a new education checkpoint. Completing sales associate post-license education earlier does not replace the broker post-license requirement. Likewise, a 14-hour CE package does not substitute for required first-renewal post-license education.
Check your own record before enrolling
Open your DBPR account and identify your license category, expiration date, and renewal history. Put those details beside the course description. If you are unsure which renewal cycle applies, resolve that question before purchasing. A colleague's deadline or course choice may be different from yours.
Use a simple checklist: license number, license type, expiration date, required course, completion date, certificate saved, and renewal submitted. Track education completion and the renewal transaction as separate tasks. Finishing a course does not mean you have paid the state's renewal fee or completed every renewal step.
Why the first-renewal deadline deserves special attention
Under Florida Statutes section 475.17, failure to complete required post-license education before the first renewal can make the license null and void. Do not assume a late fee or a reactivation course will resolve it. Limited statutory exceptions exist, including possible physical-hardship relief; ask DBPR about your specific situation if the deadline has passed or you cannot finish.
Read the controlling Florida post-license statute for the consequences and exceptions.
Keep proof of completion
Save your completion certificate somewhere you can find it independently of your course login. DBPR notes that post-license hours may not appear in the portal like ordinary CE hours, so a missing CE entry alone does not establish that post-license education was not completed. Keep the certificate and contact your school or DBPR if the record needs clarification.
Build a completion plan with room for problems
Choose a target finish date ahead of your actual deadline. Work backward around your transactions, work hours, and family commitments. Reserve time for required assessments and any technical or reporting questions. These planning buffers are personal safeguards, not extensions of the state's deadline.
Choose your FRES course
If your first renewal requires post-license education, compare FRES sales associate and broker post-license courses.
If you are in a later renewal cycle, review FRES continuing education options and match the package to the hours and subjects you still need.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I take 14-hour CE instead of my first-renewal post-license course?
No. Required first-renewal post-license education is a separate requirement. Select the course for your license category and renewal stage.
Does course completion automatically renew my license?
No. Keep your certificate and separately complete the applicable DBPR renewal steps and payment.
What if my post-license hours do not appear as CE credits?
DBPR says post-license education may not display like ordinary CE. Keep your completion certificate and resolve any uncertainty with the provider or DBPR.
